Letters to the President by America’s Youth

1)Letter from Spongebobsquarepants

It is apparent from the author of this letter, that he has environmental concerns and is probably living in an area where coal is mined. Directly or indirectly, coal must have an economic influence on his life or his family’s life, yet I am sure that he understands the issue of climate change/global warming as it must have been taught to him in school. It appears that the causes for global warming should be spread out to culprits other than just the coal industry, that the blame game is too concentrated on a resource that effects him personally. Spongebobsquarepants wants the president and the nation to understand that something needs to be done, and this should be spread out to other industries that have an impact on the environment.

2)Letter from Cesar C.

15 year old Cesar wrote an excellent letter to the president. It was well researched with multiple sources for the information which was presented, and in addition, he provided hypothetical solutions for the problems which he initially outlined. Besides enumerating his concerns about the fact that we as a nation use too much oil in comparison to other nations, Cesar suggests that there are so many alternatives to oil which would make life better for his generation, and the generations which will follow him. Clearly, Cesar is quite an intellectual for his age.

3)Letter from Samuel C.

Samuel C, makes a relatively good case for further gun control in the United States, especially gun controlled aimed at having high caliber assault weapons. The letter is relatively well written, but not on the same intellectual level as the letter written by Cesar C. I think it is apparent that most of the emotions professed by Samuel is derived from television news, as there seems to be an absence of critical thinking and the addresses most of the topics normally found on main stream news boadcasts. It is interesting to note that Samuel is quite concerned about gun violence happening one day in his school and that he even loses sleep over this matter.

4)Letter from Adrina Z.

Another 15 year old is chiming in on the very unique project to address the president of the United States. In this case, Adrina is a native Chaldean, who apparently is a refugee to the U.S. from the war torn nation of Iraq. Adrina write a very poignant and emotional letter to the president requesting him or her to involve the US to a much greater extent than has been heretofore promised.. Her issue is that the United States is only committing a paltry number of military forces to comat and eliminate ISIS. Adrina has cited a few resources to demonstrate where she has received most of her knowledge, however, I believe that when one carefully reads her letter, there are family members who are influencing her opinions, and rightly so. Hopefully, as Adrina becomes a little older, she will understand that the violence that is so prevalent in the Middle East is a direct result of illegal US interventions in this sphere of the world.

5)Letter from Angelina

Angelina’s concern to the president concerns police brutailty which according to her is occuring  almost everywhere in the world, yet she is influenced by events that have happened close to home. This probably prompted her in writing the president as what happens locally usually has a direct influence on the minds of young people. Even though the letter is not well written,-I am surmising that Angleina might be an ESL student – she does express her concerns over excessive police brutality quite well and one does derive a feeling that it may have been the topic of discussion with her friends and family in the past.

Letter from Nick Ferrari

Living in the State of New Jersey, Nick feels that illegal immigration in the principal problem that should be addressed by the next president of the United States. It is amazing to read his insights, as they are clearly influenced by much of the rhetoric one of the candidates has expoused throughout the campaign and supported by that right leaning major television broadcast network. A few facts mentioned by Nick have been mixed up with reality, but that is OK, since he is only 14 years of age but seems to possess some rather strong political opinions. Any kid having a political opinion at that age should be commended, and not be criticized too severely. Once nick is exposed to other complex issues that our nation faces, he will realize that taking a stand on this one particular issue needs to be examined in a much larger context than he is doing in his letter.
